In 2009 alone, T-Town PAWS rescued, cared for, and spayed or neutered nearly 700 unwanted animals from our community's shelter - animals who otherwise faced euthanasia for lack or space or time at the shelter. Your donations are greatly needed.

JOIN Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation (AVRAL)

avral

AVRAL is a grassroots, nonpartisan political action committee (PAC) that works to influence legislation and support the passage of policies favorable to the welfare of companion animals. T-Town PAWS joins AVRAL in the belief that the current approach to animal welfare in Alabama is inefficient, too costly for taxpayers, and does little to address pressing animal welfare issues in this state.

So, how can YOU help?

States Dr. Rhonda Parker, State Chair, AVRAL, "Right now, we need MEMBERS more than anything. We need strong representation in every voting district in Alabama. If we are to help animals in Alabama, getting political is the ONLY way to do it. Simply caring about animals isn’t enough. We have to work to get politicians and animal-friendly legislation in place. We can only do that by building voting blocs. So, spread the word."

Please help us distribute this flyer far and wide.  AVRAL needs you. Alabama’s animals need you.

May 6 Tornado Update

Tuscaloosa Pet Rescue

Disaster Response Fact Sheet - May 6, 2011

Metro Animal Shelter, located at 3140 35th Street, is serving as our community’s hub for lost/found pets.  To date, the shelter has taken in over 165 dogs/puppies and 140 cats/kittens displaced by the storm, with over 40 pets reunited with their families.

Pet rescue organizations like T-Town PAWS and HSWA are supporting the shelter’s efforts by collecting donations, providing volunteer support, and developing lists of foster families for longer-term care/helping place animals.

On behalf of Metro Animal Shelter, T-Town PAWS, HSWA, and the entire Tuscaloosa pet rescue community, we thank everyone for the generous outpouring of support in the wake of the recent, devastating storms.

How to help...

Immediate Volunteer Needs:

Metro Animal Shelter needs volunteers for animal care shifts.  Please sign up at the shelter or by calling (205) 752-9101.  Shifts may be filled several days in advance but help continues to be needed.  Shifts are generally 8-11, 11-2, and 2-6, however any time that can be given is appreciated.

Veterinarians and vet techs are needed to help injured animals.  Call (205) 752-9101.

Long-term Volunteer Needs:

Temporary foster homes will be needed for lost and displaced pets once the appropriate waiting period for owners to reclaim has passed.  Sign up by contacting Metro Animal Shelter at (205) 752-9101 or by calling T-Town PAWS at (205) 752-1931 or by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

DONATIONS

In addition to cash donations, the following items are needed: cat litter, crates & cages, dog houses & kennels, and snacks/drinks for workers.  Donations can be delivered to the shelter, to the old Locklear car dealership on 35th/Greensboro, or to a T-Town PAWS drop-off location – BB&T in Northport or Nancy & Co. Fine Jewelers.

PET ADOPTIONS

Metro Animal Shelter transferred its adoptable animals to regional rescue groups following the storm to make room for lost/found pets.  Check petfinder.com and search the Tuscaloosa area for current adoptable pets or consider adopting a pet rescued from the storm once they are released for adoption.

PAWS Announces Potential Project with UA

grantT-Town PAWS is pleased to partner with The University of Alabama on a collaborative project application in partnership with local schools, the juvenile justice system and other local nonprofit organizations. The project’s focus is to promote youth civic engagement in animal welfare and protection. Project members share T-Town PAWS’ belief that involving youth in advocacy and educational activities related to animal welfare is likely to be of great benefit not only to animals, but to the youth themselves.

If funded, the project would provide Tuscaloosa adolescents with opportunities to reflect on their involvement and interact with civic and political institutions as advocates for neglected and abandoned animals. The youths would be trained, then provided extensive hands-on animal welfare volunteer experiences such as organizing local supply drives, educational programs and presentations at local schools and businesses and even coordinating advocacy with civic leaders. In addition to serving as a key volunteer site, PAWS would engage students and their mentors in TNR (Trap, Spay/Neuter and Release) efforts. If funded, the three-year project will begin this September.

T-Town PAWS is Tuscaloosa’s Animal Welfare Organization. By expanding the 2011 programming, T-Town PAWS strives to make the greatest impact on the pet overpopulation problem in Alabama. As leaders of a coalition of local animal welfare groups, T-Town PAWS is working toward a no-kill Tuscaloosa community. T-Town PAWS exists because of the kind contributions and volunteer efforts of our local community.

Max is a star!

March 15 is Adopt the Internet Day, founded by Petfinder. In honor of their 15th birthday, Petfinder is asking people everywhere to pledge to spread the word online about adoptable pets on March 15, 2011.

Petfinder shelters and rescue groups around the country nominated their most-adoptable pets in honor of the event. T-Town PAWS nominated Max, a Westie/Terrier mix with lots of energy. Today, PAWS received word that Max has been selected as one of eleven animals to be featured on Oprah.com!

Help us spread the news of this local star and find him a forever home!

Max's Bio:

Max is almost two years old, and he's a Westie/Terrier mix.  He is a very energetic and athletic dog who would enjoy an owner who enjoys exercise.  He can jump VERY high.  Although he's not right for a home with children or other animals, he is eager to learn new tricks, having recently mastered "sit."  He's had all his shots, and he is fixed.  Call T-Town PAWS at 205-752-1931 today to arrange to meet him.
